NRPA reports over 70% of U.S. adults have tried gardening

According to the latest National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Park Pulse poll, nearly three-quarters of U.S. adults have engaged in gardening at some point in their lives. Many park and recreation agencies offer community gardens, enabling individuals to cultivate vegetables or flowers collectively. Access to these gardens is especially valuable for those lacking space or resources for gardening at home. Over 33 million people have participated in community gardening initiatives.

Key Insights:

  • 74% of U.S. adults have gardened.
  • The most popular gardening methods include outdoor container gardening (48%) and in-ground gardening (48%).
  • In-ground gardening is particularly favored by baby boomers (64%) compared to Gen Xers (47%), millennials (41%), and Gen Zers (31%).
  • Gen Zers and millennials are more likely to utilize community gardens (15% and 16%, respectively) compared to older generations, with only 7% of Gen X and 3% of baby boomers having participated.
  • 10% of U.S. adults have engaged in community gardening through avenues such as local parks and recreation departments or homeowners associations.

“Access to fresh foods and the ability to garden is important to overall wellness,” said Melissa May, NRPA senior manager of research. “Gardening provides so many benefits to communities and we are thankful for the many parks and recreation agencies who provide spaces to garden for those who are not otherwise able to at their home.”

NRPA Park Pulse, through a monthly survey of 1,000 U.S. residents focusing on park and recreation matters, contributes to narrating the story of parks and recreation. For further insights into NRPA’s Park Pulse and to explore outcomes from past surveys, click here.
